Jackson ushered Cerris outside and took a deep breath. He should have known better, really, but he’d thought Lenny would be too busy doing one thing or another to realize who Cerris was. Mael already knew, and Morgan and Maddie had stayed out of it, even though Jackson knew they were curious.

Jackson hadn’t expected Cerris to tell anyone they were mates, but he hadn’t been able to help the disappointment that had swelled in his chest when it happened. Cerris had a lot to deal with, and Jackson was ready to wait all the time in the world for him, but he couldn’t help how he felt.

Cerris was his mate, and Jackson wanted to be able to show the world they belonged together. He wanted everyone to know Cerris was his, that the gorgeous, sweet man was his.

But Cerris wasn’t his, not yet, maybe never. If Cerris didn’t manage to get over the fact that Jackson was a werewolf, there wouldn’t be a future for them. One way to help him get over it was showing him werewolves had normal lives, were just as normal as shifters, that being a werewolf didn’t mean killing people or being out of control. That even when they were forced to shift during the full moon, they could still be in control.

“Are you ready?” he asked Cerris.

Cerris nodded. “You’ll need to think about the place where we’re going. It has to be specific, so pick a place you know well.”

Jackson closed his eyes and thought about the house he’d grown up in, the house he still considered home even though he lived in Gillham. He thought of the front door, of the flowers that were just starting to bud by the porch. He jerked when something touched his hand.

“It’s only me. I have to touch you, remember?” Cerris said.

Jackson nodded. Cerris didn’t have to actually take his hand to shimmer, but Jackson was glad he had done that rather than just touch his shoulder or something like that. He thought of his house again, opening his eyes only when Cerris’ hand left his.

The house was there, yellow flowers dancing in the breeze in the front garden. Jackson smiled and relaxed. No matter what happened with Cerris, he’d always have this. He’d always have his family, his mother and his father, his home to come back to.

He looked at Cerris. “So, I thought you could meet my mom before doing anything else. I know you want to go find Walter, and I promise we’ll go, but Mom knows more about the situation than I do. I also want you to see how a werewolf family is.” There was no way Cerris could think Jackson’s five-year-old sister was a monster. Sue was an angel, even when she was in her furry form.

“That’s fine.”

Jackson didn’t think Cerris was telling the truth. He’d gone pale, and he was looking at the house with wide eyes.

Jackson leaned closer. “They’re not going to eat you, I promise.”

Cerris shrugged, and when he didn’t say anything, Jackson thought he wouldn’t get any other answer.
